Although Hong Kong was colony of the British Empire, on 1 July, 1997, it was handed over to the People’s Republic of China, based on the Sino-British Joint Declaration issued in 1984. Similarly, Portugal handed over Macao to China on December 20, 1999. Although it was decided that both regions would retain a high degree of autonomy for 50 years, their situation has deteriorated recently.
