Revitalizing UN Peacekeeping Operations 1990s
The initial roles of Peacekeeping operations (PKOs) mainly comprised of the monitoring of ceasefires by establishing buffer zones. Following the end of the Cold War, in addition to the monitoring of ceasefires, PKOs began to engage in peacebuilding activities to address an increase in the number of internal conflicts. A typical case is the post-conflict reconstruction of Cambodia. More recently, the implementation of PKOs began in countries still in conflict, such as in Somalia and the former Yugoslavia. This in turn raised questions concerning the safety of PKO personnel and the excessive dependance on peace enforcement by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
