After the Cold War increasing numbers of African countries became democraticy with their people enjoying political freedom. However, the number of serious regional conflicts also increased. Since the conflicts involved the collapse of some nations they increased in the number of refugees, and various attempts to reconcile conflicting parties were taken by neighboring countries, the African Union, and the United Nations. Moreover, peace keeping operations forces were deployed for long periods. However, despite these efforts, many such conflicts have not ceased, even in the 21st century.
