Across much of the Arab world, democratic movements surged, and many young people joined large-scale street demonstrations. In the countries under dictatorship, such as Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen, Prime Ministers and Presidents were forced to resign, which heightened expectations for open and democratic political systems. However the rapid political changes involved violence, resulting in turmoil and civil wars in Syria and Yemen, while in Egypt, an even more authoritarian regime emerged. In most of these countries, the daily living conditions of the common citizens remain difficult today.
