Independence of the Third World

The Decisions of Asian and African Countries 1940s

In the latter half of the 20th century, colonies in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa became independent one after another. Together with Latin American countries, many of these former colonies formed the Third World, which did not belong to either of the Western Bloc led by the United States (the First World) or the Eastern Bloc led by the Soviet Union (the Second World). The Third World called for efforts to resolve tremendous economic disparity between advanced countries, comprising the former colonial powers in the northern hemisphere, and developing countries, comprising former colonies in the southern hemisphere (the North-South problem).
