Development of the Global Women’s Movement

Women Speaking Out 1950s-

After World War II, women’s peace movements became active around the world. In 1953, the Women’s International Democratic Federation held the World Congress of Women in Copenhagen to discuss issues of peace and women’s rights. In 1955, in response to Japanese women’s call for the ban of nuclear weapons, the organization held the World Congress of Mothers in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1967 the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, in order to achieve gender equality and eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.
