Daily Life on the Home Front

During the war all Japanese people were expected to serve the nation. At the lowest level of  administrative organizations, community groups and neighborhood associations were formed. These small units controlled the purchase of bonds, the allocation of savings, and the management of the rationing of daily necessities. Under these systems, people were encouraged to support the war while supervising each  other. To solve the labor shortage caused by the drafting of young and middle-aged men, women, students, school children, and people in the colonies were mobilized to work at munitions factories,mines,etc. Wishing for Japan’s victory in the war, people endured hard work and an austere life.
