The Manchurian Incident and the Kwantung Army

Enthusiastic Support for the War 1931

After a series of overseas deployments of Japanese troops, including the Shandong expedition in 1927 and the dispatch of troops in the Huanggutun Incident in 1928, a railroad was blown up near Liutiao Lake in 1931 (the Liutiao Incident). Although the railroad was blown up by officers of the Japanese Kwangtung Army, Japan concealed this fact and began to occupy Manchuria. In the following year, Japan founded the puppet state of Manchukuo in Manchuria. Since the Japanese economy was declining at the time due to the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Great Depression, Japanese people welcomed the war boom that resulted from the expansion of military operations and they supported Japan’s military forces.
