In the Allied countries of Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union, women were mobilized to serve as in their militaries. In the Axis countries of Japan, Germany, and Italy, the role of women was considered to be to give birth. In Japan, married women were obliged to support soldiers through women’s groups, while unmarried women served as either civilian employees of the military forces or workers in various industries. In 1945, when the war situation deteriorated for Japan, the government enacted the Volunteer Service Law and established Volunteer Fighting Corps. Since women were also required to serve as soldiers under the new system, for the first time, Japanese people recognized that under the Constitution, both men and women were required to serve in the military.
