Cross-National Social Movements

The Interlinkage of Social Movements around the World 1920s

After World War I and the Russian Revolution, nationalist and social movements occurred in various parts of the world. They began to influence one another by crossing national borders. In Japan, the number of political movements increased in a quest for universal suffrage and competitive party politics, alongside social movements that demanded the liberation and empowerment of workers, farmers, women, and people in ostracized communities called the buraku. In the colonies, the surge of nationalist and social movements propelled global anti-imperialist movements. In this environment, the Japanese government enacted the 1925 Peace Preservation Law to control these social movements.
