Japan’s modernization went hand in hand with its imperialization and the colonization of the land owned by other peoples. The Meiji government officially incorporated Ezo (lands to the north of the Honshū main island) in 1869 and the Ryukyu an kingdom(Okinawa) in 1879 (a process known as “Ryukyu Disposition”). Although the Meiji government held negotiations with the Qing Empire as to Ryukyu’s decoupling from the Chinese tributary system, and with Russia concerning territorial disputes over the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin, the government ignored the Ainu and Okinawan people, who were inhabitants of these lands.
