The Russo-Japanese War and Manchuria

Growing Imperialism 1904-1905

Japan and Russia began confronting each other over the domination of Korea and Manchuria (a northeastern region of China). After the breakdown of negotiations between the two countries, Japan launched a war by attacking the Russian navy at Incheon and Lushun (Port Arthur). The tide of the war was favorable for Japan since it gained support from Britain and the United States and took advantage of political disturbances within Russia. After Japan’s victory at the Battle of Tsushima (a naval battle in the Sea of Japan), Japan sought to hold peace negotiations. As a result of the Treaty of Portsmouth, Japan obtained from Russia the southern half of Sakhalin, lease rights to Lushun and Dalian, and the Russian rail system in the area south of Changchun, together with rights associated with the railway. To manage these concessions, the Japanese government established the Office of the Governor-General of Kwantung and the South Manchuria Railway Company.
