Birth of a Colonial Empire in Asia 1894-1895
In 1894, when the Peasant War of Jiawu (Donghak Peasant Movement/Donghak Peasant Revolution) broke out in Korea, both Japan and the Qing dynasty of China dispatched their troops to Korea. After the end of the Peasant War, Japan refused to withdraw its troops, occupied the Korean royal palace, and began attacking the Qing’s forces, which led to the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). After suppressing the Donghak Peasant Party that had risen up again, the Japanese troops invaded China from Korea with overwhelming power. The Treaty of Shimonoseki, signed in April 1895, stipulated the obtainment of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands by Japan as its territory, in addition to reparations. In this way, Japan became the first Asian country to possess colonies.
