Upholding the Slogan “Fu Qing Mie Yang” 1900
After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Empire borrowed funds to pay reparations to Japan from the great powers. In return, these powers increased economic penetration into various parts of China. In this environment, the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, known as the “Boxers” because many of its members had practiced Chinese boxing, became influential across Shandong Province. Upholding the slogan “Fu Qing Mie Yang” (“Support the Qing and Exterminate the Foreigners”), the Boxers besieged the legations of several countries in Beijing in 1900. When the Qing government decided to support the Boxers, it attacked the forces of the eight-nation alliance moving to lift the siege the legation. In response, the alliance reinforced their forces and occupied Beijing to remove the Boxers from the city. In 1901, the Qing empire signed the Boxer Protocol, pursuant to which the Chinese government paid a huge sum of reparations and permitted foreign troops to be stationed in various places in North China.
