Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule for half a century from 1895 to 1945. During that period, about 400,000 Japanese people lived in Taiwan, working as staff of the Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan, police officers, teachers, business owners or employees, with approximately 6 million local Taiwanese (Han Chinese and aboriginals) under their rule. Taiwan also served as a base for Japan’s advancement into southern China and Southeast Asia.
