In Syria a civil war broke out in 2011, when the Assad regime used force to suppress on going anti-dictatorship protests. The Islamic State, a transnational Sunni insurgent group was later established and fought both government forces and rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War. Half of Syrian’s population were either killed or displaced to areas either within or outside the country. Many refugees fled to Germany and other European countries, where they were met by a backlash and measures to keep them out. Today, the Assad regime once again controls most of Syria. In the northwestern region, however, armed conflict continues, forcing refugees to lead insecure lives.
