In Asia, industrialization coupled with economic growth led to the emergence of citizens who were fully aware of their rights. At the same time, the Perestroika (reform) of the Soviet Union and China’s opening-up policy led to the erosion of the Cold War regime, which had supported dictatorial political systems. In this environment, many people in Asia began to engage in democratic movements in pursuit of the establishment of multi-party parliamentary politics and the freedom of thought and speech. In Asia, a democraty movement first started in the Philippines and spread to the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia.
