The Surrender of Italy and Germany

The End of the War in Europe  1945

After invading Poland in 1939, Germany formed the Axis alliance with Italy (Axis Powers) and initially maintained a dominant position in battles against Britain, France, and the Soviet Union (Allied Powers). Around 1942, joined by the United States, the Allied Powers mounted a counteroffensive. In 1943, the Kingdom of Italy surrendered to the Allied Powers and joined the Allies in a position of co-belligerence. The Allies, with their power growing, began more intensive bombing various parts of Germany. On the Eastern front in July 1943, the Soviet army counterattacked at the Battle of Kursk, which led to the withdrawal of German troops into Europe. Two days after the execution of Mussolini on April 28, 1945, Hitler committed suicide on April 30, which led to the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.
