In a quest for military resources, Japan occupied Singapore, located on the southernmost tip of the Asian mainland, almost two months after the outbreak of the Asia-Pacific War on 8 December , 1941. By 1942, Japan had occupied almost all regions of Southeast Asia, including the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), the Philippines, and Burma (now Myanmar).
